Boulogne-sur-Mer: A Charming Weekend Escape
Just across the Channel from Dover, Boulogne-sur-Mer is a charming historic port town that blends culture, character, and coastal appeal. Only 30 minutes from Calais by car, it's picturesque and walkable - perfect for a relaxed weekend escape.
Haute Ville (the walled old town) is a delight to explore. Wander around the cobbled streets, stroll atop the medieval ramparts, and taking in the views of the Basilica of Notre-Dame with its striking UNESCO-listed belfry.
Eating and drinking:
Boulogne-sur-Mer is a haven for seafood lovers. Expect dishes like bouillabaisse, moules-frites, and freshly caught fish. You can also try Potjevleesch, a traditional Flemish terrine popular in the region.
Many restaurants along the main street in the old town serve a menu du jour of hearty, rustic food. Some of our favourites included The Swan and La Table du Beffroi in the old town, and Le Plaisance (just outside of the town walls).
Whether you're after mid-afternoon refreshment, an aperitif, or an after-dinner drink, the old town also offers plenty of choice. Bars include The Vole Hole, Froggy Blues, craft beer pub and wine bar, La Cave de Monsieur Guy and Le Bouillon.
Once you’ve explored the centre, take a walk over the hill to reach a wide, sandy beach – albeit was rather windy during our visit.
Set right on the beach, Nausicaá is Europe’s largest aquarium, offering a family-friendly and immersive look at marine life and ocean conservation. We didn’t visit, but it is listed as one of the top attractions in the area.
Street art:
Boulogne-sur-Mer has become a colourful hub for street art over the past decade, thanks to a city-wide initiative launched in 2016. Each year, internationally renowned street artists are invited to create large-scale murals across the city, transforming ordinary buildings into striking works of art. With the current count at over 40 murals, the town feels like an open-air art gallery.

Here are some of my favourites:
Before you head home, take the opportunity to stock up on good (and inexpensive) French wine from a local supermarket. Top tip: Visit before midday if you’re travelling over a Sunday, as many shops in France close in the afternoon. And don’t forget to check UK duty-free allowances before you buy.
